Mental Health Professionals give back to U.S. Troops

'Give an Hour' is a United States nonprofit organization providing free mental health services to troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and their loved ones.
All the Mental Health Professionals volunteer their services.

Many of us have heard of the mental anguish returning soldiers and their families suffer as a result of the violence and distance caused by war. Give an Hour volunteers provide much needed counsel to troops and their families, helping them to reconnect and live successfully after years of warfare and seperation.

This issue is depicted in the upcoming movie Brothers.

10 million volunteers = $10 billion dollars

Volunteers play a key role in promoting public health and providing health care, including prevention of epidemics such as HIV/AIDS and malaria. From participating in community sanitation campaigns to donating time and resources for building hospitals, voluntary efforts can be seen in myriad forms.

In 2000, ten million people volunteered to support the immunization of 550 million children as part of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Most of them were concerned citizens, volunteering in their own communities. They gave their time to ensure that children reported to immunization stations, were properly documented, and received the oral vaccine. The total value of the support provided by volunteers was estimated at US$ 10 billion, well beyond the reach of governments or international and national organizations.

Volunteer Revolution

"We need a new volunteerism...The old volunteerism was based upon charity. The new volunteerism is based on building a community whose values are shared equally."

-Deepak Chopra

Will this economic crisis breed a new culture of volunterism? As faith wanes throughout the world in financial stability and job security, are we embracing the value of community more and individuality less? What do you think?

Addiction Depiction

Art can take us into a world of imagery and emotion far deeper than words can express. This dance piece choreographed by Mia Michaels took my breath away. Depicting a force that can't be escaped, this spoke to me on many levels. What do you think? Share with us your thoughts and other works of art you feel express captivity, freedom and most importantly, HOPE. Email your thoughts to nicolel@fameforfamilies.com and/or comment on this post.

All About FAME

Who We Are

What we do.

The Family Association for Mental Health Everywhere (F.A.M.E.) offers support to families where any mental illness is an issue by providing education, resources and coping strategies.

It's about the families.

We believe families make up the basic social structure of our society. Family members provide ongoing support and connection for many of our life experiences. This is particularly so for persons who are vulnerable or ill.

We understand because we've been there.

As an organization brought together by families, we have a thorough understanding of the challenges and emotions experienced in supporting a family member with a mental illness.

Reduce the stress of coping.

F.A.M.E. is organized for and by families to reduce the stress of coping with mental illness by strengthening and supporting family members in our role as caregivers. We can provide advocacy, education, referrals and counseling to families that have a mentally ill relative of any diagnosis.

Families have a voice.

F.A.M.E. works hard to ensure that families have a strong voice within their communities. We are based on a self-help model which respects and supports the expertise that families have regarding their mentally ill relative and their experience in the system.
